Green hydrogen production is the process of creating hydrogen fuel through electrolysis powered exclusively by renewable energy sources like solar or wind power, resulting in zero carbon emissions. Unlike conventional hydrogen production methods, green hydrogen offers a genuinely sustainable pathway to decarbonize heavy industry, transportation, and energy storage sectors.
Electrolyzers split water molecules (H₂O) into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity from renewable sources. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) and alkaline electrolyzers are the dominant technologies, with current system efficiencies ranging from 60-80%. Large-scale facilities can produce 10+ tons of hydrogen daily, though production costs remain at $4-6 per kilogram compared to $1-2 for grey hydrogen.
Grey hydrogen, which accounts for 95% of current production, uses natural gas reformation and emits 9-12 kg of CO₂ per kg of hydrogen produced. Blue hydrogen captures some emissions through carbon storage, achieving 60-90% reduction. Green hydrogen produces zero emissions at the point of production, making it the only truly carbon-neutral option when powered by renewables.
Green hydrogen enables long-duration energy storage, decarbonizes steel and ammonia production, and powers fuel cell vehicles with zero tailpipe emissions. The International Energy Agency projects green hydrogen demand could reach 530 million tons annually by 2050, creating a $2.5 trillion market while eliminating billions of tons of CO₂ emissions.
