Chinese solar manufacturers including GCL Technology, Longi Green Energy, and TCL Zhonghuan are actively licensing perovskite solar cell technology from research institutions and technology developers to establish gigawatt-scale production lines. These licensing agreements target commercial production by 2024-2025, with projected efficiencies exceeding 28% for perovskite-silicon tandem cells—significantly outperforming conventional silicon panels at 22-24%.
GCL Technology has licensed perovskite intellectual property from Oxford PV and established a 600 MW pilot production facility in Kunshan. Longi Green Energy partnered with Microquanta Semiconductor to develop perovskite-on-silicon tandems, announcing plans for 1 GW capacity by 2025. TCL Zhonghuan has invested in Utmolight, a Chinese perovskite startup, securing exclusive manufacturing rights for their film deposition technology. These partnerships demonstrate China’s strategic push to dominate next-generation solar manufacturing before Western competitors scale production.
Chinese manufacturers are targeting combined perovskite production capacity exceeding 3 GW by 2026, according to industry forecasts. GCL’s roadmap includes scaling to 2 GW annually by 2027, while smaller players like Microquanta plan 500 MW lines. The manufacturing approach focuses on roll-to-roll printing and vapor deposition techniques that promise 40% lower production costs than traditional silicon processing. Early commercial modules are expected to cost $0.18-0.22 per watt, compared to $0.25-0.30 for premium silicon panels.
Perovskite solar cells offer superior power-to-weight ratios, flexibility for building-integrated applications, and lower temperature processing requirements. Laboratory efficiencies have reached 33.9% for tandem configurations, with commercial modules targeting 26-28%. The technology’s compatibility with existing silicon infrastructure allows manufacturers to upgrade production lines incrementally rather than rebuilding facilities entirely—a critical advantage for cost-conscious Chinese producers seeking rapid deployment.
